The Big & Small: Reflections on Agility and Winning in the Market

This past year stretched me in a new way. I had the opportunity to work across the spectrum — from PE-owned brands and large manufacturers to small, scrappy builders. For the first time, I could clearly see brand and business building from both extremes, side by side.

Here’s what surprised me.

The big players have undeniable advantages: capital, best-in-class tools, oceans of data, and teams packed with polished, highly paid talent. Their platforms are the result of multiple rounds of ideation, rigorous validation, and impressive infrastructure. On paper, they should win every time.

And yet — they don’t always.

What I watched, again and again, was how often smaller builders outpaced them. Free from heavy process, endless alignment meetings, and layers of stakeholders, they moved with speed and clarity. No drag. No delay. Just a wide, open runway — and immediate lift-off.

I’ll be honest: operating with limited data was uncomfortable at times. I had to rely heavily on instinct. But that discomfort turned out to be deeply empowering. When unpacking major front-end innovation opportunities, one lesson kept surfacing: most of us already know enough to succeed. When that knowledge is paired with a culture biased toward action and speed, the results can be extraordinary.

Which leads me to this belief: The real advantage lies in combining the strengths of both worlds.

Big organizations need to radically simplify — fewer processes, fewer toolkits, fewer decks that confuse motion with progress. Small companies, on the other hand, should capture their magic by embedding just enough rigor to make their momentum repeatable and scalable.

Precision and speed.

Insight and action.

Intention and execution.

That balance doesn’t come from tools or titles. It comes from humility and curiosity — the willingness to admit there’s always a better way, and the courage to go find it.

That’s where real growth and value creation happens.
